Plot

In 1300 BC, Moses is a respected warrior in his own right, who serves the Egyptian empire with all his devotion. He is out to expand the empire with his brother, Prince Rameses II, soon to be the Pharaoh. However, a prophecy will change their lives, as well as the destiny of Egypt once and for all. Is Moses ready to accept his destiny?

Star Performances

For all its flaws, the editor as well as the production designer need to be given their due in terms of making the film at least visually appealing.

Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Rameses II have played their part to near perfection. Despite the limitations of the script, they tried to make their parts at least convincing though.

Analysis

Imagine you are making a pizza. You have the cheese, you have the sauce, you have the veggies, and the seasoning in a perfect arrangement. You have done your job well, except for one small thing: the bread for the base!

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ sadly follows the same pattern. In terms of sets and visuals, the film is far from a disappointment. Even for those who are fond of the older versions, the movie would at least appeal visually.

The screenplay though is a different story. Though the movie is only two and a half hours long, it initially seems more of a snoozefest. The writers took so long to build up the narrative, that by the time they came to the main subject, i.e. Moses’ quest for liberty, the viewers found it tough to maintain their patience altogether.

Nobody would believe that this is the same Ridley Scott who had made a classic like ‘ Gladiator Click to look into! >> Read More... .’ The writers take unnecessary detours, and at times the narrative looks plain boring. That is not how you make a biblical drama, do you?

Despite a stellar cast, some of the actors fell out of place. While Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton were not bad, their performances could not make up for a wafer-thin storyline. Even Aaron Paul and Ben Kingsley looked rather awkward in their respective roles.

Verdict

'Exodus: Gods and Kings’ is an example of what happens when you invest more in style than substance. The film is technically sound, and the performances are okay as well. But the script, as well as the direction, falls short of expectations. You can watch this if you are a VFX geek.
