Robert De Niro A legendary actor and one of the most influential >> Read More... and Zac Efron Zac Efron is the debonair screen icon in Hollywood >> Read More... together seemed to be a strange pair for a film in the comedy genre. But then again, they seemed perfect for a grandpa-grandson duo. Jackass already set high standards for crude and vulgar comedy and in such a setting with “ Bad Grandpa Click to look into! >> Read More... ” and Dirty Grandpa tries its level best with skills like detailed dialogues, but seems to miss the point and goes overboard.

Plot

On the very day of his wife’s funeral, Dick (De Niro) convinces his grandson Jason (Efron) into helping him fulfill his want to honour his late spouse by taking the same journey from Georgia to Boca Raton that they made each year. Though his wedding was approaching, Jason, a corporate lawyer working for his father, David ( Dermot Mulroney Dermot Mulroney is an eminent American actor, film >> Read More... ) agrees to the task but with a bit of reluctance. After all, it was a road trip with his boring grandpa or so he thought.

Analysis

While the movie had established the fact that it shall be based upon crude and vulgar humour, with the other essentials like nudity etc., that such a film requires. One seems to think what compelled De Niro to do such a role. The Intern Click to look into! >> Read More... wasn’t such a bad film; it’s confusing as to why an actor of such great capability would undertake such a role. However, De Niro seems relaxed and comfortable in playing Dick, the dirty grandpa. The movie has a lot of puns, lines written with extreme detail as if they wanted the audience to think that 'oh he did not just say that!' However, it seems to hit the bull’s-eye and tickle the audience’s funny bone.

Star Performances

Robert De Niro’s performance in the comedy genre is quite debatable, while some may find him to fit into the genre. Some might beg to differ. Nonetheless, De Niro gives the role his best and it seems like one of those roles he did for the sake of a vacation. Zac Efron has carved himself a niche in this particular genre (Neighbors, Neighbors2: Sorority) he’s gotten comfortable with the crude jokes and comedy and seems to have developed a liking towards flaunting his body frequently.

What’s there?

1. Crude Humour, Nudity (Efron’s body, and other stuff) is what you expect from the film. 2. Dialogues and liners which seemed to have been written with grave detail and utmost attention. 3. Robert De Niro (Yeah, the man himself is like a plus point to the film).

What’s not there?

1. Gets too vulgar and irritating. There’s a limit to which you can tolerate it. 2. It seems to screw up everything that it tries to portray, even the meanings they want to convey to the audience indirectly. It’s like a screw up which could have been saved. 3. The movie has its share of laughs, but also its share of disappointments.

Verdict

Overall, Dirty Grandpa is a movie you want to watch if • you’re in the mood to watch something close to porn but not in the mood to actually watch some. • If you feel the urge to watch some badass movie that can help you turn off your mind. I’d recommend the Hangover trilogy if you feel the above urges.
