Plot

After a casino heist, siblings Addison and Liza are on the run. They are hotly pursued by Sheriff Marshall Becker and his group. Meanwhile, Jay Mills, a convict who has been just released from prison, is visiting his mother for Thanksgiving. However, he is caught in this mess as well. Who will survive this chase?

Star Performances

Stefan Ruzowitzky has done a commendable job in making a rather predictable plot engaging, as well as intriguing.

Eric Bana as the fugitive Addison is another standout performer. Despite her limited screen space, Kate Mara does her very best as the cop Hannah Becker.

Analysis

How do you make a regular, run-of-the-mill thriller interesting? Well, director Stefan Ruzowitzky probably has an answer for you. Despite the cliched narrative, ‘Deadfall’ is slick, enthralling, as well as creatively satisfying.

While the movie could have done better with some creative twists and turns, it is still worth a watch. The director keeps the plot fast-paced, yet enough intriguing to keep the viewers glued to the silver screen, anticipating the next turn.

There are some creative plots for which the director Stefan can pat his back. Combining Thanksgiving with a chase in the snow is not something you expect in a typical thriller. Yet, ‘Deadfall’ has this interesting twist, with a deep message embedded in the plot. The relationship between the scheming cop Marshall Becker and his daughter Hannah is also equally intriguing. If only more screen space was given to these two.

However, ‘Deadfall’ is not the perfect thriller that one would love to die for. There are some twists in the plot, that you could see from miles coming. Even if you could ignore that, the acting expressions of some of the crew are not. Some of the actors in this film portrayed their roles with such expressions, that even a wall would seem livelier. Yet, ‘Deadfall’ somehow manages to keep the power of narrative intact

What's There?

  • Brilliant direction by Stefan Ruzowitzky
  • Razor sharp writing by Scott Z Burns
  • Impressive performances from Eric Bana, Charlie Hunnam and Kate Mara
  • Unique plot integration done right

What's Not There?

  • Clunky editing
  • Predictable Twists
  • Deadpan expressions of some actors

Verdict

‘Deadfall’ might not be something innovative. However, it is a fast-paced action thriller that will keep you hooked until the very end. Great direction, coupled with crisp performances, makes this movie an intriguing experience!
