Shawn Christensen wears multiple hats in Before I Disappear; he has produced, written, directed and acted in the film. And as though not enough, he has also composed a song. Now let’s see how the movie has turned out to be.

Plot

Christensen is so beaten up by life that he is in the verge of committing suicide. He is asked to drop his cousin in her flat.

And our dull hero does what is required of him. His cousin treats him with indifference. Both are not able to tolerate each other. But the twist in the story happens when his sister reveals that she is in a situation to spend some time in jail. And now Christensen is pushed to a situation wherein he should spend time with his snobbish cousin. What happens next? Watch the movie to gets answer to this question.

Star Performances

As an actor, Christensen has his own share of good moments in the movie. As the person who is caught in the pangs of drug addiction and depression he does quite a convincing job. Ptacek plays her role with earnestness while Rossum too has done a convincing job.

Analysis

The movie is an expansion of the 2012 Oscar winning short film, Curfew where Christensen and Ptacek shared screen space. In this film too they assume same roles.

What’s there?

The dance by Ptacek in the bowling alley is one of the highlights of the movie.
The long night has its share of gripping moments.
The film has an interesting plot and the cynicism that the film presents is well-worked by the director.
The cinematography of Daniel Katz is outstanding.

What’s not there?

The film is loaded with quite many stories but has not deeply touched all the stories.

Verdict

For a debut director, Before I Disappear is a convincing piece.
