Plot

When her plan to marry her wealthy fiancé backfires, gold digger Elizabeth Halsey returns to middle school. She is extremely bad at her job but just wants to save enough money of all things, for a breast implant surgery. However, an incident within the school forces her to contemplate her approach to her life.

Star Performances

Cameron Diaz is the heart and soul of this film. She carries the film on her shoulders, with her brash and uncensored portrayal of a no-holds-barred, opportunist Elizabeth.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Lucy Punch, Justin Timberlake, and Jason Segel being the standout performers.

Analysis

When was the last time you enjoyed a film that did not care a dime about the approach of its characters? ‘Bad Teacher’ is one of those rare commercial entertainers, that only concentrates on entertaining the audience, ignoring the ever-grumbling critics as if they never existed.

‘Bad Teacher’ is a film not many would even dream of. It is brash, unapologetic, and above all, unintimidating. The ‘devil may care’ attitude is reflected both in the character of Cameron Diaz and the screenplay of the film.

While Cameron Diaz is quite popular for her unconventional roles, this film is rather bold even by her standards. However, she is well-matched by Lucy Punch. Even though she is not exactly an antagonist, her portrayal of Amy Squirrel is the perfect foil to the twisted Elizabeth Halsey. Justin Timberlake has also done justice with his character.

Even the performance of Jason Segel as the brash, foul-mouthed Russell is a welcome surprise. While the integration of his character with the plot may not be smooth, his performance makes viewers root for him. If only his character was equally well-developed.

‘Bad Teacher’ is dark humor that is weird, yet funny. Yet, some of the plot loopholes prevent it from becoming an absolute laughter riot. Some of the character transformations, including that of Cameron, are far from natural. However, if you are ready to ignore that, ‘Bad Teacher’ is a roller coaster ride of emotions.

‘Bad Teacher’ is one of those films that is the absolute antithesis of what critics want to make you believe. It might not be a masterpiece, but if you love dark comedies with a raunchy sense of humor, just go for this!
