Plot: The year is 391 AD and Alexandria is a part of the Roman Empire. Hypatia(Rachel Weisz) is a teacher at Platonic School where she teaches and educates the future leaders. Her father is the director of the Museum of Alexandria. Hypatia, her father, her father’s slave and two of her pupils try to change and better the social and political norms so as to have a better society. One of the two pupils proposes to her about his feelings to which she responds negatively saying that love causes pain but studying does not. Her father’s slave Davus helps her in managing her classes and eventually it is revealed that she is in love with her. Meanwhile, pandemonium break in the streets of Rome as Christians and Pagans start demeaning each other’s gods.

Hypatia’s father is gravely injured, and he along with Hypatia takes refuge in the library of Serapeum. The unrest ends soon as the Roman Emperor pardon the Pagans, later Hypatia along with few pagans try to save some important scrolls from the library as they fear that Christians would destroy it, Davus sexually assaults Hypatia but later on repents for his behavior and offers her a sword to finish him off but he gets pardoned by Hypatia. Later Orestes one of the pupils of Hypatia who had earlier proposed to her has now converted to Christianity and is now a prefect of Alexandria.

Hypatia meanwhile engrosses herself into studying various planetary motions and tries to decode the mystery of orbit paths of different planets. But her studying is short-lived as many Christians believe that she is cooking stories, and nothing is real in it, this brings Jews who have hatred towards Christians to say the otherwise and are at war of words and acts with each other. Meanwhile, Cyril (Sami Samir) thinks that Hypatia has too much influence over Orestes and plans to have her being subjugated by the Prefect.

Hypatia’s former pupil Synesius, who is now a Bishop of Cyrene, comes to her rescue but asks her to convert to Christianity before to which she disagrees. Cyril meanwhile raises a hoax that Hypatia is a witch when she is engaged in a conversation about the orbits of the planets with the people, convinced that she indeed is a witch they strip her and are about to stone her when Davus comes to her rescue but fails to save her and leaves her as she gets stoned for her practical and knowledgeable personality.

Analysis: This is an interesting movie and rarely do such movies evoke interest amongst the viewers. Though a historical outing, Agora has lots to teach and unravel about the great medieval past of this Earth when the likes of Aristotle, Pythagoras, etc. were present and Hypatia, who got killed mercilessly, her only fault being curious to know the Universe of which she is the part. The screenplay is brilliant with some really catchy acts from Rachel and other actors.

Star Performances: Rachel Weisz looks so beautiful and knowledgeable in this movie that we can rightfully call her “Beauty with the Brains,” one id compelled first and later on convinced to think that if Hypatia would be alive today, it had to be Rachel Weisz, such is her act in this movie.

What's There?

• Glorious past portrayed perfectly and served with truth.

• Fine Screenplay.

• Actors do not exaggerate their roles much.

What's Not There?

• More detailed storyline apart from the life of Hypatia would have been a pure bliss.

Verdict: This movie should be watched not for the history and the tragedies that happened in the past but for the genius that went down the history without any words of appreciation but with abuses. A must-watch.
