After Earth Movie Review
ORE AST REW
- Gary Whitta
- Night Shyamalan
The movie After Earth is an American flick. The movie hit the screens in 2013. The film is based on science fiction and intertwined with action and adventure. The movie’s director is M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan and Gary Whitta have penned the screenplay. The film draws inspiration from an idea by actor Will Smith. Will Smith and Jaden Smith are father and son in real life. They perform roles in the movie. Following ‘Pursuit of Happiness’, Will and Jaden have worked together in the film After Earth.
Plot: The film went back in time a thousand years ago. People on Earth are pressurized to leave their home planet to Nova Prime. General Cypher Raige’s family is the noted one in Nova Prime. His son Kitai has to follow his father’s trail, but their relationship is strained. Both father and son go on a trip to smoothen their relationship. They find themselves on Earth again. The atmosphere is hostile, and now is the time to prove they are affectionate father and son. Else, they are dead. There is no surprising twist in the movie. The action scenes do cause a surge of adrenalin. At the same time, as parenting guidance to his son Jaden Smith, Will Smith has made his son wade in a pool of water without teaching him to swim. Jaden Smith is a very talented actor. But, he does not have that personal charisma to bind the audiences to their seats.
The dialogues by Jaden sound like a mumble. Even Will Smith has not done much in the movie. Will Smith occupies more screen space, and Jaden subtly reveals a lack of confidence in making frequent appearances. The reviews for the film were mostly negative. Jaden Smith’s performance in the movie was not appreciated. Also, the critics found many flaws in the script and the plot. Even though the film was a failure in America, it had moderate box-office collections in other countries.
Verdict: The movie is an average entertainer for the weekend.
