Plot

Years after high school, Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko reunite at a police training academy. Following their graduation as probationary officers, they are assigned a unique assignment. The two must re-enter a high school, and find out the culprits behind a drug racket that operates from within. The two rediscover their identities and race against all odds to bust the drug racket. Will they succeed?

Star Performances

Writers Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall deserve a standing ovation for giving a serious TV series with a delightful comical twist. The way they keep the conceptual vision intact, infusing a generous dose of humor, is more than commendable.

Contrary to expectations, Jonah Hill [also one of the leads] and Channing Tatum are the star performers in this film. They make sure that the audience cheers for them and laughs at their bumbling acts.

Brie Larson and Rob Riggle have done equal justice to their roles. Viewers will be delighted to find a sweet cameo from Johnny Depp, who shot to fame through the original television series.

Analysis

Well, adapting a classic into a film is certainly not an easy job. It becomes even tougher if the project is a popular television series.

But thumbs up to writers Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall. They managed to give 21 Jump Street a revamp that nobody expected, but that everyone would love to watch. The movie is unique, delightful, wacky, and yet maintains the sanctity of the original series.

Handling a sensitive subject with care is another uphill task. But the director duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller make sure that the film is far from a disappointment. Not once do you feel awkward, or even bored. As they say, it is good to be unique, and the makers of ’21 Jump Street’ do it the right way.

This film also shows the versatility of Jonah Hill in just the right way. Very few actors are equally good with the pen, but Jonah Hill is one unique case. Channing Tatum as the suave yet bumbling buddy Greg Jenko is another delight to watch. Brie Larson does not get as much to explore as Molly Tracey. However, she is still likable in her role. Rob Riggle as the main antagonist is also a welcome surprise.

The movie is not without its share of flaws. Thankfully, they are very few and do not ruin the overall experience.

What's There?

• Impressive script from Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall

• Able direction

• Hilarious, yet engaging screenplay

• Brilliant acting performances from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum

What's Not There?

• Minor Flaws

Verdict

’21 Jump Street’ is a welcome surprise. The makers give it a unique, but entertaining twist. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s performances are like the icing on this wonderful cake of a film. You must watch this film at all costs.
