Famous by his stage name Dhanush, actor Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, is a national heartthrob. He debuted in the year 2002 and has been in the eye of the media for his outstanding acting skills since then. Though Dhanush works on film of various genres his action movies are the most popular. 1. Maari
Maari’s story revolves around Maari, a local gangster who pesters people and extorts money from them. The role of Maari is played by Dhanush and he is also the co-producer of the film. Dhanush had to speak in a Madras accent for the role. His character was a person who is into pigeon racing, similar to the one he played in Aadukalam, where he was seen as a person dealing with rooster fights. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with lyrics written by Dhanush, Vignesh Shivan, and G. Rokesh. The film marks the third collaboration between Dhanush and Anirudh Ravichander.
2. Raanjhanaa
Raanjhanaa is a Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Aanand L. Rai. Written by Himanshu Sharma and produced by Krishika Lulla. It stars Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Swara Bhaskar. It is the Hindi film debut for Dhanush. The story revolves around Kundan(played by Dhanush), a Hindu Brahmin who falls for a Muslim girl, Zoya (played by Sonam Kapoor). Dhanush reportedly underwent training for fluency in the Hindi language to obtain the role.
3. Asuran
Inspired by the real-life Kilvenmani massacre of 1968, Asuran was written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. Based on Poomani's novel Vekkai, the film stars Dhanush and Manju Warrier, where the latter makes her Tamil debut. In the movie, Dhanush plays the role of Sivasaami, a man in his 40s fighting for the honor of his caste and village. Dhanush received a lot of praise for his portrayal of Sivasaami. He won the Best actor award in various award shows for this movie.
4. Pudhu Pettai
Dhanush plays the part of a don in the Selvaraghavan-directed 2006 film, Pudhupettai. The film was produced by K Muralidharan, V Swaminathan, and G Venugopal. The film is somewhat based on the life of Auto Shankar, a famous don in the late 80s. The story of the film revolves around Kumar, who, due to unavoidable circumstances, becomes a part of a gang and eventually keeps increasing his crimes. Pudhupettai earned nearly ₹27.55 in three days, including ₹9.8 lakh from Sathyam Cinemas. It went on to have an average run at the box office despite taking a grand opening, with Selvaraghavan suggesting that excessively violent scenes might have kept family audiences.
5. Mayakkam Enna
Another film written and directed by Selvaraghavan, Mayakkam Enna, is a musical drama film. It is produced by Gemini Film Circuit with Aum Productions Selvaraghavan’s banner. It stars Dhanush, along with Richa Gangopadhyay. The story of the film is about Karthik, an aspiring wildlife photographer, who is cheated by his idol, which to him turn into an alcoholic and re-establishing his life.
6. Polladhavan
Polladhavan marks Vetrimaran’s directorial debut. It stars Dhanush and Divya Spandana. The story of the film revolves around Prabhu Shankar, whose life improves after buying a bike, and he considers his bike his lucky charm, but everything turns upside down when his beloved motorcycle gets stolen. Velraj was the director of cinematography, V. T. Vijayan edited the film, and Rambo Rajkumar choreographed the stunts. Receiving a tremendously positive response, it popularized the Bajaj Pulsar among the youth. The film was remade in several languages, owing to its success.
7. Karnan
Karnan is directed by Mari Selvaraj and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. The film stars Dhanush, Lal, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam, and Rajisha Vijayan. The story of the film revolves around Karnan (played by Dhanush) who is a member of an oppressed community and fights for the rights of his community.
8. Velaiyilla Pattathari
Velaiilla Pattadhari, popularly known as VIP, was written and directed by Velraj in his directorial debut. The film stars Dhanush and Amala Paul, along with Vivek, Saranya Ponvannan, Samuthirakani, and Surbhi playing supporting roles. Dhanush also worked as the lyricist and album producer on the film's original soundtrack. Anirudh Ravichander composed the film's album and score. Hari Dinesh handled the stunt department. The film revolves around Raghuvaran (played by Dhanush), a graduate who has been unemployed for four years, and how he gets a job while successfully overcoming various obstacles before and after finding employment.
9. Vada Chennai
Vada Chennai is written and directed by Vetrimaaran in his fourth film as a director. It is the first installment in a planned trilogy. It was produced by A. Subaskaran. It stars Dhanush as Anbu, a skilled carrom player who becomes a reluctant part in a war between two rival dons. The film casts Ameer, Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji, Kishore, Pawan, Andrea Jeremiah, and Aishwarya Rajesh.
10. Aadukalam
Aadukalam is directed by Vetrimaran and produced by Five Star Kathiresan. It stars Dhanush and Taapsee Pannu, Kishore, V. I. S. Jayapalan, Naren, and Murugadoss, playing supporting roles. The film revolves around the rivalry between two rooster trainers. Dhanush plays the part of Karuppa, a rooster trainer under the two rival teams. The film won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor. The film was also felicitated with five awards in the 59th Filmfare Awards South – Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Music Director, and Best Cinematography.
