This film is about Catherine Ann Watson (Julia Roberts), who accepts a position teaching art history at Wellesley College. Most of the students seem to be biding their time and waiting for the right man to marry. Watson feels they are not reaching their full potential and encourages the girls to see through new eyes, but her views are incompatible with the dominant culture of the college.
