Durairaj, popularly known as ‘Meena’ is an Indian actress, who acts in South Indian films. She was born on 16th September, 1976 in Chennai. She is also a dancer, singer and also hosts television shows. Her parents are ‘Durairaj’ who is Tamil and ‘Raj Mallika’ who is Malayali. She has been acting since 1982 when she started as a child artist. She has acted in a lot of different South Indian movies and in different languages like Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam and even in Hindi movies.
She studied in Vidyodhya schools in Chennai but only till class 8, because of her busy acting schedule. She went on to get a masters degree in ‘History’ from “University Of Madras” through an ‘Open University system’.
She is a trained dancer and speaks in six different languages i.e. Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and English. She has won the “Lalitha Kalanjali Award” for her role in ‘Chanti’ in 1992. She even bagged the best actress award for ‘Muthu’ in 1995 and three times ‘Filmfare, best actress award’. She also won the famous “Kalaimamani Awards” in 1998. Her recent award ‘Tsr Tv9- 2010 awards’ and ‘Ugadi Puraskaar Award -2011’ under special jury and “The Best actress”.
Meena’s debut movie was “Nejangal” a tamil movie in 1982 as a child artist. Her film career as an actress started with “Seetharamaiah gari Manavaralu parallel” in Tamil too, with ‘Oru Puthiya Kathai’. She was highly recognized with her Telugu film Chanti . She was one of the biggest heroine of the South Indian film industry in the 1990s.
