He was born in Gangi Amman Koil Street, Natesan Nagar, Virugambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and later got his high school diploma and computer science degree in 1999. Ganesh’s journey to cinematography had lots of struggles and difficulties. He has done ad films while working as DOP for Renault Internal Training Corporate Av: Fluence, Duster, Pulse, Kwid, and Duster New. He has also done ad films for Skoda Internal Training Corporate AV (Skoda Superb) and for TATA Internal Training Corporate AV (Indigo, EVV2, and Manza).

He has also done audiovisual work for Maruti Internal Training Corporate S-Cross. G.K. Ganesh Raja also worked for corporate AVs such as Galazy Surfactant (a global chemical supplier), Kenwell (a biopharmaceutical company), and ICTACT (a training centre). He also worked in the short film Chennai Metro and in commercials for Silky Saree (Calicut), Maa Mango, Maya and Maya Soap, PMC Tech Hosur, Ahalya Textiles, Gold Winner Oil, RMZ Latitude (Banglore), and BAJAJ V15. He later worked in films as well. In the Tamil movies Aarundra, Ayogya, and Kirumi, he worked as the second unit DOP. In the movie Gupped Antha Prema, he worked as an additional DOP. Ganesh Raja has also worked as a cinematographer on the TV series Chocolate.
