Ashwin Gopakumar

Ashwin Goapkumar is an Indian singer. He is also the frontman of the famous South Indian band named When Chai Met Toast. He has contributed to movies such as Jacobite Swargarajyam, Aanandam, Solo, and others. The vocalist is a sensation in Kerala’s music circuit, and his band is one of the promising groups in the country. Till now they have released an album named The Joy of Little Things.

Ashwin Gopakumar took birth in Trivandrum, Kerala. As a child, he used to sing, but he never considered it seriously. He also used to be part of the school choir. Later he went to the SCT Engineering Institute and during his college days got more into music, he formed a metal band under the name Purple Blood. In 2011 after Ashwin graduated, he did a diploma in jazz vocals from the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music.

Then he did a music business diploma from the Musicians Institute. After this, he got into the field of negotiations and did an internship at the American Artists as n Assistant booking agent. He was also a marketing and events executive at Counter Culture in Bangalore.

In 2013, he moved to a company named Springr; it managed gigs and stage shows. In four to five years, Ashwin explored many event management firms and gained experience. He was also the marketing head at EnteCity and Un-Mute Academy. In 2015, he coordinated Empty Vessel Productions, a media house to promote and work on DIY (Do it yourself) gigs in Kerala.

He also enrolled in the McNally Smith Music College. It was in 2015 that Ashwin made his next big move and formed the band 'When Chai Met Toast.' The name got its Inspiration from a café menu. It depicts the blend of Indian and Western music. The group has four members namely Achyuth Jaigoapal, Pai Sailesh, Palle Francis, and Ashwin himself.

Ashiwn and Achyuth do the songwriting while Sailesh and Francis accompany them on drum set and keyboard. In 2017, When Chai Met Toast released their first rock band album named The Joy of Little Things. It had three songs name Firefly, Beautiful World, and the title track. The music got its inspiration from bands such as The Alabama Shakes, The Lumineers, and Coldplay.
