Malayalam Director Joshy Mathew

A multiple Award-winning director, Joshy Mathew is one of the filmmakers in the Malayalam film industry whose films attract a larger section of children. Joshy Mathew was born in Kottayam, a city in Kerala on 8th May 1953 to Pala KM Mathew, a former Member of Parliament and a prolific writer, and Maryamma Mathew. Joshy was brought up in Kerala, along with his six siblings. He finished his schooling from M.T Seminary Higher Secondary School Kottayam and obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from CMS College Kottayam. Joshy Mathew met his now-wife Moly Joshy Mathew during his college, and the couple got married in 1978. They have two sons, Sudip Joshy Mathew, a Filmmaker, and Sanju Joshy Mathew.

Joshy Mathew met renowned Malayalam filmmaker P.Padmarajan during a camp in 1984. Following the meeting, Joshy started his career by assisting Padmarajan in his films. He made his directorial debut in the year 1991 with the movie Nakshatra Koodaram, a movie for children. His next was Oru Kadankatha Pole starring Jayaram and Geetha.  His notable creations as a director are Rajadhani in 1994 and Man of the Match in 1996. However, he took a break from film making for over ten years and decided to give life to the story that has been in his mind for so long. The film was Pathaam Nilayile Theevandi, and the movie became a critically acclaimed film fetching several awards, including FIPRESCI AWARD at the International Film Festival of Kerala 2009.

Black Forest focuses on the life of tribes in forests through three children. Black Forest was greatly acclaimed for the message it conveyed, and it received the prestigious award of the country, National Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation and Kerala State Award for Best Environmental Film and Best Children Film. Moreover, the movie got selected for several film festivals, including the Moscow International Film Festival and International Children’s Film Festival, Hyderabad. Joshy Mathew’s next film In A Far Away Land got released in 2018, fetching him his second Kerala State Award for Best Children’s Film. In A Far Away Land was screened in Rain International Nature Film Festival 2019. Other than directing, Joshy has appeared in the movie Thureeyam as himself and Ennaalum Sarath as Violin Teacher.

Joshy Mathew owns a theatre group exclusively for children named Navyug Children's Theatre and Movie Village, which was initiated by his father, Pala KM Mathew. Joshy Mathew is regarded as one of the most talented directors in the Malayalam industry. It’s all because of his hard work and sheer determination.
