Hailing from Jodhpur, Jatin and Lalit imbibed musical skills mainly from their father Pandit Pratap Narayanan. They also learnt piano and guitar from Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, who is famously called as Laxmikant-Pyarelal (Laxmikant is another musician). Late music director, Aadesh Srivastava is their brother-in-law.

This duo kick started their profession in 1991 with the film Yaara Dildara. The film bombed at the box office, but the music was a great hit. Later, they gained recognition for their compositions in Khiladi and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. The song Pehla Nasha from the film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander was in the lips of every Indian. Iconic R D Burman’s method of music composition had a great influence in this duo. Their works were much sought for during the late 90s. Their compositions include 473 songs. The lyricists with which Jatin and Lalit worked, include , , Javed Akthtar and Sameer. Playback singers , , , Abhijeet Bhattarcharya, , Hariharan, , , , Kavita Krishnamoorthy have all sung under their compositions.

The music albums of this duo had various songs which were given music by other musical artists, in their final years as joint musicians. Though this was not appreciated by the duo, the directors and producers wanted it. Jatin-Lalit have the credit of being one of the pioneers to pen songs sung by Bollywood stars (For eg. Aati Kya Kandala (Aamir Khan)).

Jaitn-Lalit had a brief stint with acting; they gave a short appearance in the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. They appeared as judges for the famous musical show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

This duo is not party bird and is withdrawn. The duo had worked together for over 16 years and then they have separated ways stating personal issues. Jatin and Lalit have also composed music as separate musicians.

Jatin and Lalit’s composition for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge had phenomenal success. Their compositions for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham also spelt magic.
