Bengali Music Director Ranjit Gazmer

Ranjit Gazmer is an Indian film director and musician, best known for his Nepali language film work. He has had a long relationship with music director R.D. Burman as an artist. He comes from a family of gold merchants in Darjeeling, West Bengal. He was part of a music group called 'Sangam Club' and was the drummer of 'The Hillians,’ the first western band founded in Darjeeling. In 1966, he and his friends moved to Birgunj, Nepal, along with Anuradha Koirala (then Anuradha Gurung), who had an English-speaking private school.

After the first play in which he composed a song, he was asked to attend a recording of it at the Film Center, Tardeo. He was in Mumbai and recorded the songs in local studios. Ranjit Gazmer, also known as Kancha, was born on October 3 in 1941, in Darjeeling into a prominent family of gold merchants. Gazmer trained under Amber Gurung at the Art Academy of Music. He was also a drummer at the Georgia Banks.

He also worked briefly at an English-speaking private school, the Royal Nepal Academy, while there. At the time, Manohari Singh, Burman's closest colleague and member of his team, visited the school and the two rekindle old friendships from his HMV recording days in Calcutta. Gazmer was instructed by Manohar's brother to carry his medal and sit on it. Gazmer entertained them with one of his old songs he sang about. He made a recording, after the recording, Burman named him Kancha, after which he lived for several years. It was the first time madal sound had been used in Hindi film music. Generally, it was Burman who used the sound in his songs and Gazmer was not praised for playing the instrument in all of these songs.

This was the beginning of their long-term relationship. Gazmer has been a major part of Burmese music and has been a major player in those days.  Nearly three decades into the long organization, Gazmer has raised the standards for Burman-based teams from the B to the Special Group.
