Prashant made his film career debut in 2012 when his low-budget Indian film, Delhi in a Day released to critical appreciation. He later wrote and directed Umrika, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It was the winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award. He gives credit to his constant moving and exposure to different parts of the world as the biggest impact on the subjects of his movies. As a result of his childhood, Prashant is fluent in English, French, and Hindi and studied Italian, German, and Arabic. Prashant initially worked as a social media entrepreneur until late 2010, when he first moved towards a career in film. His first full-length movie was the low-budget Delhi In A Day, which Prashant said he made as a sort of film school. The movie went on to have a limited release in India in 2012. It was well-received by critics and voted one of the top ten independent films of the year by Times of India.

Prashant’s 2015 movie, Umrika became the only Indian movie to win any award at the well-known Sundance Film Festival. It was the winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award. Its European premiere happened at the 2015 Karlovy Vary Film Festival after which the movie went on to play at over forty international film festivals, and picking up many awards including the HP Bridging the Borders Award at the 2016 Palm Spring International Film Festival. It also got the FIPRESC Critic's prize at the Cairo International Film Festival 2015. Shortly after the premiere, theatrical rights of the movie were sold by sales agent Beta Cinema to France, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Austria, and numerous other territories, making it one of the most widely distributed Indian independent films in recent times.
