Mani Damodara Chakyar is a very famous Kutiyattam and Chakyar Koothu artist from Kerala. He has served the world with his performance for years. He was always an intelligent person, and it showed with his results. He studied Sanskrit and Natyasastra in his childhood days. He holds a Master’s Degree in Sanskrit literature. He studied Chakyar Koothu and Koodiyattam from Mani Madhava Chakyar for more than 30 years. His education from Mani Madhava helped him a lot in his career. He was a member of the troupe of legendary Guru Padma Shri Mani Madhava Chakyar. The Koodiyattam troupe performed outside Kerala for the first time in 1962. He performs a huge number of Atiyantara Koothu of the ManI Family consisting of all these devotional ritualistic Koothu and Koodiyattam in famous temples in Kerala for decades.

There were many famous temples which had the opportunity to have the sacred Koothu and Koodiyattam like Bhagavathi Temple, Taliparamba Rajarajeshwara temple, Kottiyoor Perumal Temple, Thali Siva Temple and many more. It was an honor to perform in temples like these and always a work of good deeds. He was also the member of Mani Madhava Chakyar’s troupe that performed outside Kerala such as New Delhi, Banaras, Ujjain, Mumbai, Bhopal, and Madras. The art of Koodiyattam was spread across India very quickly, and Mani was a very important part of it. He was a multitalented personality performing various types of Koodiyattam.

He performed as Nayaka as well as Vidushaka in some Kudiyattams such as Swapnavasavadaattam, Naganandam, Subhadrahananjayam and much more. He received the role of Nayaka when Mani Madhava Chakyar choreographed and directed Kalidasa’s Malavikagnimitra and Vikramorvasiya for the first time at Kalidasa Academy. He was the first Koodiyattam student who received a scholarship for MHRD New Delhi. He received both junior and senior fellowships from the same department. He received numerous prizes from different temples and cultural organization. He also received an award from the Kerala Sangeet Natak Academy for his contributions to Chakyar Koothu and Koodiyattam in 2000. He also received the Kerala Kalamandalam VS Sharma Endowment Award in 2007. He is a legend for people who follow Koodiyattam, as he has heightened the flag for Koodiyattam and Koothu all over the world. He is an ideal inspiration for anyone following this art as he has contributed his whole life to it.
