SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated series which telecasts on Nickelodeon. Marine science instructor and animator Stephen Hillenburg created the show. The series describes the adventures and attempts of the title character and his friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. It is the fifth-longest-running American animated series; its popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as the highest-rated series to ever air on Nickelodeon, and the most distributed property of Viacom Media Networks. He began making SpongeBob SquarePants into a television series in 1996 and approached Tom Kenny to voice the title character.
The series is about the title character and a group of his marine friends. SpongeBob SquarePants is an energetic and cheerful sea creature who looks like a rectangular kitchen sponge. He lives in a deluged pineapple with his companion snail Gary, who meows like a kitten. SpongeBob has a childlike enthusiasm towards life, which he carries over to his job as a cook at a fast-food restaurant called the Krusty Krab. Living two houses from SpongeBob is his best friend Patrick Star, a dull yet friendly pink starfish who lives under a rock. Despite his mental failures, Patrick still considers himself intelligent.
The owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant is a miser red crab named Mr. Krabs who talks like a sailor and runs his restaurant as if it is a pirate ship. He is a single parent having one teenage daughter, who is a sperm whale named Pearl. Mr. Krabs wants to pass down his wealth to his daughter. When SpongeBob is not cooking at the Krusty Krab, he takes boat-driving lessons from Mrs. Puff, a paranoid but patient pufferfish. Mrs. Puff's regard SpongeBob as his most diligent student because he knows every answer to the oral exams he takes. However, he panics and crashes the boat every time he tries to drive a real boat. When Mrs. Puff suffers any of SpongeBob's crashes or is frightened, she puffs into a ball.
