Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi is a Tamil television series, which also goes by its short name NVOK. The show is in the format of a game show. It is adapted from the original American show called Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which was very famous and popular in American television. Kaun Banega Crorepati, which was hosted and anchored by the famous
Amitabh Bachchan, was also adapted from the same American show and was equally popular in India. The show got launched in the year 2012, on 27 February. And on 12 July of the same year, the show came to an end. It is telecasted in the Tamil channel of Star Vijay since then.
The famous actor Suriya hosts the show. Business Standard had announced earlier in April 2011 that there was going to be a Tamil adaptation of Kaun Banega Crorepati, and which will be hosted by
Prakash Raj. At that time the show’s name was titled to be Ungalil Yaar Koddeswaran. Eventually even the actor Vijay, according to the news channels, came to be in consideration for the show’s host. But finally, the show’s name was announced to be Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi, and the host was declared to be Suriya. In the beginning, Suriya was a little skeptical about the show, as it was going to be his debut into the television industry. But eventually, he was convinced after learning about the game’s format. The format of the show begins with a round called the “Fastest Finger First.”
In this round, a group of people is asked a question, and whoever gives the correct answer first is welcomed to the hot seat to play the main game. Whenever somebody comes to the hot seat, he or she is sequentially asked fifteen questions. Sequentially, each question’s amount increases, and leads the total prize money up to a whopping one Crore. The first five questions are bound by a timer which allows the contestant only 30 seconds to answer each question, as they are relatively easy. The second five questions are bit tougher, so the each question is time bound by 45 seconds now.
And finally, as the last five questions are very hard to answer, so the contestant is bound by no time. All these questions are multiple choice type, and a set of lifelines are offered to the contestants as well if they are unable to answer a question. Unlike other game formats, this game’s concept allows the player or contestant to decide to leave whenever he or she wants with the amount of money he or she has won up till that point of the game.
