The story begins with Bal Kand, where Janak, King of Mithila, does not have any child. Mithila suffered from drought for 12 years and on the other side, Rama and his brothers are under the guardianship of Guru Vashista.

As a tradition, Janak starts to plough the land with a golden plough and unearths a baby girl. The baby's first cry leads to rainfall. Rishi Yagyavalkya advices him to shelter the baby after which Janak names her Sita. Sita's father, Janak, arranges a Swayamvar in which the person who will be able to lift the Shiv Dhanush will marry her but no one except Rama picks up the Dhanush. Hence, as per the rule Rama's marriage is arranged with Sita. Ravan is also invited in the Swayamvar but since he was unable to lift the Shiv Dhanush, he was very angry and decides to take revenge from the king. After this, Ayodhya Kand begins in which Mandodari's mother helps her for getting the Amrita but Vibhishana cautions Mandodari that Ravan should never find out about his eternity. After all, these Mandodari succeeded.

Meanwhile, the four princes Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna, reache Ayodhya with the four princesses of Mythila, who have now become their wives. All the three wives of Dasrath - Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra greet them. Soon Manthara fills Kaikeyi’s ears for the future king of Ayodhya. She says to her that Bharat should be the King, and not Rama. This results in sending Rama to exile for 14 years. Sita requests Rama to take her with him or she will not be able to live. Lakshman also goes with Rama and Sita. Meanwhile, Bharat and Shatrughna, who were out of Ayodhya, were sent a message for coming back.

When Bharat came to know about his mother's deed he refuses to become the King and along with Janak goes to the forest for bringing back Rama. Kaikeyi thanks Janak for making her realize about her love for Rama. Rama is sad after getting to know about his father's death and says Bharata to go back as he will stay in the forest and fulfil their father's last wish. Upon hearing this Bharat asks for Rama's sandals and goes back to Ayodhya. In Ayodhya Bharata keeps those sandals on the throne, saying that he cannot take his brother Rama’s place. The story continues which is needed to be watched in Seedhayin Raaman.
