Marma Desam, meaning “Land of Mystery” is a collection of television series, comprised of successive episodes of short stories dealing with supernatural occurrences. These stories are purely fictitious and explore some real - life beliefs and traditions. Marma Desam was an extremely successful tele – serial and the hallmark of the stories are the delicate mix of mystery and mystique of super-human acts.
The stories are
(a) Ragasiyam, meaning “The Secret” explores the mysterious healing of Nava bhashana Lingams of Lord Shiva.
(b) Vidadhu Karuppu, meaning “Karuppu Never Relents” examines the concept of split personality while exploring in detail the legend of the Hindu village deity “Karuppu Sami” prevalent in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.
(c) Sorna Reghai, meaning “Golden Palm Lines” revolves around the field of Palmistry.
(d) Iyandhira Paravai, meaning “The Mechanical Bird” explores the practice of Varmakalai.
(e) Edhuvum Nadakkum, meaning “Anything Can Happen” deals with the environment as a living entity.
Marma Desam was premiered on Sun Network and Raj television channels between years 1997 and 2001 and became a runaway hit amongst the audience. The show broadcasts it’s episodes on weekdays. It was directed by Naga, produced by the legendary director K. Balachander and the stories were written by the great novelist Indira Soundarajan. It was ranked first among the television programmes telecasted from Chennai in 1998.This series is available in books and CD formats now.
