Her father, Subbu, tries his best to kill her before being born because he cannot afford a child. Kanmani’s mother, Rajeshwari, does her best to protect her. But Rajeshwari’s daughter is born mute. Subbu even suggested Rajeshwari’s doctor abort his child. But Rajeshwari refuses, and abortion cannot take place without the mother’s consent. Rajeshwari even walked on her while in her labor pains, as her husband and mother-in-law were busy sleeping.

Subbu refuses to go and check his daughter in the hospital. Meanwhile, Subbu’s mother reaches the hospital and steals Rajeshwari’s daughter when she is sleeping and goes to abandon her at the feet of the statue of Lord Ganesha. Rajeshwari pleads with her mother-in-law to return her daughter. Rajeshwari gets her daughter after an amount of great drama. Subbu’s house gets sealed as he is in great debts. He blames the child for this loss and considers her unlucky. He also tries to throw her out, but his mother stops her. Despite all of this, Rajeshwari treats her daughter lovingly.Kanmani is ridiculed by her father for being mute. Her mother is also insulted because of Kanmani. Kanmani is blessed with a brother.

Her brother, Raja,is treated like a king by his father and grand-mom. All the children go to school, but Subbu’s mother refuses Kanmani to go to school. She punishes her instead for being mute. But Rajeshwari teaches her daughter to be confident inwho she is. The serial shows all the characters grown up in the seventh episode.Kanmani’s loverin this serial,Santhosh, is introduced. He arrives from a flight back to his village after years in foreign. He is a hardworking man despite his rich upbringing. Kanmani has grown up to be a sweet and beautiful girl.

She plays musical instruments beautifully. Her brother’s raja gambling habits are ignored by her father as he is the guy despite Kanmani reporting this to her father. Kanmani delivers milk on her bicycle to earn money. On one such trip, Santhosh meets Kanmani and falls in love at first sight. After many efforts from his and proving his love, he proposes marriage for Kanmani. But first, he asks Rajeshwari before asking Kanmani for marriage as he knows how close they are.
