Dance has been an integral part of our culture since time immemorial. It helps one to communicate with others through their art. Christhavam is a show that helps us to discover our artform, Kathakali. It is premiered on Athmeeya Yatra T.V. The running time of the show is around half an hour.

Kathakali dance is a wonderful, detailed form of storytelling art in India. It blends music, poetry related to past and stories of past, and dance to tell familiar stories in the Indian culture. Its roots trace back to much further into ancient folk arts and classical dances in Kerala. These ancient folk dances were performed at religious festivals by actors wearing colorful headdresses, costumes, and elaborate, even ornate, headpieces. The origin of Kathakali is rooted in legend. It's said that a raja invited Krishnattom to perform at the temple. The performance was restricted to those of high caste and royalty. When another raja approached Krishnattom to perform for his people, he refused, saying it was not for the common man to see. In response, he created Ramanattom, who enacted stories from other epic Indian poems. Eventually, it is believed that both types of dances evolved into Kathakali in the region of Kerala, India.

Kathakali shares similarities with all other forms of dance in India. It mixes music, choreography, hand gestures, and vocal descriptions to tell stories. The stories are told by three groups of performers: the actors (who do not speak), the percussionists, and the vocalists. Traditionally, the actors were all males, but that has evolved so that both men and women can perform the Kathakali dance. The actors themselves cannot speak to tell the story but all they use their art to express it. Instead, they create their characters through detailed choreography. Additionally, these actors use mudras or hand gestures that convey the dialogue of their individual character. During Kathakali, the mudras function as a sort of sign language. Since they don't speak, actors use facial expressions to show the internal state of their character. This is known as bhava.

Characters are additionally defined by their specific makeup and costumes they wear. The color of the main makeup is of particular significance. It symbolizes different types of characters in Kathakali dance. The show really is helpful in knowing about their traditional culture. The TRP of the show is quite high. The outreach of the show to its audience is quite tremendous. It is especially very popular younger generation of society.
