Moodalmanju is a Malayalam television serial broadcasted by Flowers TV, featuring the life of a married woman by the name of Shyama. Shyama married Sharath out of love and still feels passionately for him. Sharath, on the other hand, often takes her for granted and treats her badly. Shyama belongs to an impoverished family struggling to meet two ends and, as he is the eldest son, is responsible for their maintenance. Even though he is generally mindful of his duties, occasionally he does mess up and behaves negligently. His dismissive attitude exacerbates his irritability, especially when he is under the influence of alcohol. His mother-in-law is exceptionally disapproving of him because of his alcoholism as well as for the fact that he is from a low-class household.

The story really takes off when the two embark on a much-delayed honeymoon trip to a hill station. At the destination, they take up room at a home stay situated amidst a forest area on a weary night. As they are settling in, Sharath decides to treat himself to some alcohol that he had conveniently brought along with him from home. This irks Shyama, but she warms up to him when he promises that it will be his last for the entire trip. However, things suddenly go awry when the caretaker of the stay accidentally drops and breaks the bottle. Sharath's alcoholism gets triggered so much that he immediately slaps the man and stomps off to buy another bottle. The caretaker warns him that it is not safe to go outside at such a late hour and adds that there will be wild animals nearby. Heeding no caution, he strode off into the night. Shyama sends the caretaker to go after Sharath; meanwhile, she stays back at the home, scared stiff to death of being alone in a strange and secluded place and anxiously awaits their return.

However, as fate would have it, Sharath gets detained by the police, and a stranger gives Shyama unwelcome company. The next day, it is revealed that the stranger was none other than the owner himself, who was also  an earlier acquaintance of Shyama. Shyama shudders at the sight of her college senior, Gautham, whose very presence seems to give her chills, the reason for which, we are told, was that he used to stalk her and harass her, and once even tried to force himself on her, for which he was ultimately expelled from college. Gautham, unsurprisingly, is seething with vengeance and seeks an opportune moment to strike. He takes advantage of Sharath's alcoholism while at the same time acting all nice and caring. One day, as Sharath lay drunk and unconscious, Gautham raped Shyama, leaving her in a state of deep trauma. The very next day, Shyama attempts to take her life but fails; this entirely knocks Sharath down. Thinking that it was his overindulgence that led Shyama to take her own life, he decides to turn a new leaf. Just as he resolves to change, providence delivers a big blow and brings him to his knees.
