‘Naad Bhed’ was a music reality show that was telecast on Doordarshan on August 2013. Actress Shabana Azmi was the host for this grand finale show. The show was aired on Doordarshan with the assistance of the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) which was a non-profit, non-political movement that came forward for discovering India’s upcoming talent in Hindustani and Carnatic music.
SPICMACAY in association with State Broadcaster Doordarshan had kicked off this program through regional rounds of competition through Doordarshan's 20 regional centers. It all started with Karnataka region where contestants from Dharwad, Mangalore, Bangalore and Gulbarga took part and 24 participants were qualified for auditions and selected. Later, these contestants were further pruned and the reality program was aired on DD Chandana and six participants from Karnataka region was selected in quarterfinals round.
Thus, 120 contestants who got qualified through 20 DD’s regional centers took part in the quarter finals which was held in Chennai and Kolkata respectively. There were two centers to judge the contestant of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music separately. Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata was the center to judge Hindustani classical music contestants and Madras Music Academy; Chennai was the center to judge Classical music contestants in a quarterfinal round.
The top 26 from these centers were taken to national finals which were held in Mumbai. In the last event music composers like Shiv Kumar Sharma,
Parveen Sultana, R Vedavalli,
Amjad Ali Khan, Vikku Vinayakram, T V Sankaranarayanan, T N Krishnan and Hariprasad Chaurasia were honorable judges. The program was telecast at 7.30 pm every Sunday on DD National.
