Maahi Ve is a Punjabi family drama TV serial aired daily on SAB TV. It is an Edit II Productions project, directed by
Sameer Kulkarni, and written jointly by
Binita Desai and Brij Katyal. It is aired on SAB TV and had premiered on 5th December 2005 and after a successful run of 91 episodes, the saga ended on 30th October 2006. Maahi Ve delves into the lives of two Jagirdar families’ two generations entwined in emotions and pride that go deeper than it looks. The jovial sounding Punjabi dialect and the solemnity mingled with humor add unique shades to the show, making it irresistible to the audience.
The story revolves around two chubby young girls – Preeto (
Karishma Randeva) and Seebo (
Seema Shetty), who hail from a modest middle-class family, living with their widowed mother in Mumbai. Life takes them to Ludhiana, Punjab, to their ancestral home and little do they suspect that this journey would change their lives forever. Although their grandfather Thakur Vir Singh doesn’t approve of them because of some disputes with their late father, his son who had been kicked out of the house a long time ago, Sukho (Reeta Bhaduri), their grandmother is very fond of them.
The plot is largely centered in Ludhiana, a city at the heart of Punjab; however, another parallel trajectory of the tale traces itself in Mumbai, where they had formerly lived. In the background of the story is the hostility between Thakur Vir Singh (
Kulbhushan Kharbanda) and Thakur Bikram Singh who once used to be childhood buddies but a certain turn of events in the later stages of their lives had turned their friendship sour. Preeto, the daughter of Shibani and Inderjit, is the protagonist of the story. In the beginning, we see Preeto’s cheerful character reveling in the joys of life and seeking only sweetness in relationships, but as they move to Punjab, life’s sharp, blind bends wait and little is known about the future.
Preeto and Seebo conspire to undo the hostility between the two former friends who have now grown into proud, grumpy old men. Their quest places them in unexpected circumstances and takes them in unprecedented directions. Love and tragedy are a part of Preeto and Seebo’s lives as men like Sarabh (
Vikram Acharya) and Kuljit (
Tarun Khanna) enter their lives. As the two sisters get married in the same household, it is interesting to see how the lives of all these unsuspecting people get entangled in a web of love, kindness, sacrifice, bitterness, and even violence. Karishma Randeva as Preeto is this chirpy, good-natured girl who is both bright and benevolent. The actress has earlier appeared on other Hindi drama series such as ‘
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ and ‘Hello Duty.’
