The 46th Filmfare Award event was held on February 17, 2001. Films like ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’, ‘Fiza’, ‘ Kya Kehna’, ‘Refugee’ and ‘ Mohabbatein’ dominated the award show. It was Rakesh Roshan’s ‘‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ had swept away the maximum awards.

Actor Feroz Khan and singer Asha Bhosle received the Lifetime Achievement Award trophy from Filmfare. Sunidhi Chauhan won the R.D. Burman Award. Anu Malik won a special jury award. Actor and producer Rakesh Roshan got the best film award for ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’. He also received the best director trophy for the same movie. His son Hrithik Roshan was adjudged the best actor of the year. Ravi Kapoor and Honey Irani shared together the best screenplay award for film ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’.

Actress Karishma Kapoor and actress Jaya Bachchan won the best actor and 'best-supporting-actress' trophy for film ‘Fiza’. Actor Amitabh Bachchan won the best supporting actor trophy for the film ‘Mohabbatein’. Paresh Rawal won the best comedian actor for his role in ‘ Hera Pheri’. Suniel Shetty won the best villain role for film ‘ Dhadkan’. Actress Kareena Kapoor won the best debut award in female category for film ‘Refugee’ and actor Hrithik Roshan again won another trophy for the best debut award for the male category for ‘Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai’. Actress Tabu again won critics award for her performance in film ‘Astitva’ and Shah Rukh Khan took the critics award trophy for his performance in ‘Mohabbatein’.

Music composer Rajesh Roshan won the best music director award for ‘‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ and its singer Lucky Ali got best male playback singer trophy for his song ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena' from the same film. Alka Yagnik bagged another trophy for best female playback for her song 'Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se again’ in film ‘Dhadkan’. Javed Akhtar received the best lyricist trophy for song ‘Panchi Nadiyan’ in film ‘Refugee’. Basheer Ali got the best cinematographer award for his work in the film 'Refugee'.

Honey Irani got the best story writer award for 'Kya Kehna' and J.P. Dutta won the bet dialogue writer for the film 'Refugee'. Best action trophy went to Allan Amin for film ‘ Mission Kashmir’. Sanjay Verma won the best editor award for film ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’. Farah Khan took the best choreographer trophy for the song ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ in film ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’. Sandeep Chowta won the best background score award for film ‘Jungle’.
