The 45th Filmfare Awards were held in Mumbai on February 13, 2000. Actress Karishma Kapoor performed on the stage for this award night. Dream girl Hema Malini and evergreen macho star Vinod Khanna won the lifetime achievement award of the year. Actor Amitabh Bachchan won the ‘Superstar of the Millennium’ at the 45th Filmfare Awards show. Shatrughna Sinha gave the trophy to Amitabh while Manoj Bajpai declared the actor as millennium superstar.

Subash Ghai’s ‘ Taal’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘ Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ had won six awards in the different category. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' was considered the best film of the year. Best director went to Sanjay Leela Bhansali and best actress award was won by Aishwarya Rai for same film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Sanjay Dutt won the best actor award for his best performance in film ‘Vaastav’. Anil Kapoor won the best supporting actor trophy for film ‘Taal’ and Sushmita Sen won the 'best-supporting-actress' award for film ‘Biwi No.1’. Govinda won the best comedian award for his comic role in film ‘ Haseena Maan Jaayegi’.

Manoj Bajpai won the best critics actor award in the male category for his performance in film ‘Shool’. Actress Tabu took the trophy of best critics’ award in female category for film ‘Hu Tu Tu’. Filmfare critic’s award for best movie went to John Matthew Matthan for his film ‘Sarfarosh’. Ashutosh Rana won the best villain award for film ' Sangharsh'. The best music composer award went to A.R. Rahman for his soulful songs in film ‘Taal’. Anand Bakshi won the best lyricist award for the song ‘Ishq Bina’ in film ‘Taal’. Singer Udit Narayan got best male playback singer award for song 'Chand Chuppa' for the film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. The best female playback singer trophy was given to singer Alka Yagnik for song ‘Taal Se Taal’.

New debutant music composer Ismail Darbar who could not win the best music composer award this year was given ‘R.D.Burman Award’ trophy. Actress Nandita Das and actor Rahul Khanna had won the Filmfare best female and male debut award for acting in Deepa Mehta’s movie ‘1947 Earth’. The best background score award went to Anjan Biswas for film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Best editing award went to Jethu Mundul for film ‘Sarfarosh’. Best action trophy was given to Tinnu Verma for film ‘Arjun Pandit’.

Other technical category awards were granted to Rakesh Ranjan for ‘best sound’ in film ‘Taal’. The best cinematographer award went to Kabir Lal for ‘Taal’. While John Mathew Mathan won the best screenplay award and Hridaylani Vats & Pathik Vats together had won the best dialogue award for film ‘Sarfarosh’. Vinay Shukla won the best story writer award for film ‘Godmother’. The ceremony was held in Maharashtra, at the State Reserve Police grounds in Goregaon.
