The 41st Filmfare Award festival was celebrated in 1996. Aditya Chopra’s film ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) swept as many as 10 awards. It took all the awards for which the film had got a nomination. Legendary actors Ashok Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, and Sunil Dutt won the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for their long association with Indian cinema. Even Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Rangeela’ won five awards. Music Director, A. R. Rahman won the best music composer award for the same movie. It was his first Hindi Filmfare Award.

The R D Burman Filmfare Award for new music talent went to Mehboob. Yash Chopra received best film award for 'DDLJ'. Best director award went to Aditya Chopra. Best actor and best actress trophy were won by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Farida Jalal won 'best-supporting -Actress' trophy and Anupam Kher won the best comic role award. Best screenplay award went to Aditya Chopra, and best dialogue award too was jointly shared by Aditya Chopra and Javed Siddiqui. Singer Udit Narayan won the best male playback singer award for the song "Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna".

Anand Bakshi won the best lyricist award for the song "Tujhe Dekha To" from the film 'DDLJ'. Kavita Krishnamurthy won the best female playback singer trophy for song’ Mera Piya Ghar Aaya’ in film ‘Yaraana’. Ahmed Khan won the best choreographer award for song ‘ Rangeela Re’ for film ‘Rangeela’ Manish Malhotra shared even the best costume design award for the film 'Rangeela'. Santosh Sivan won the best cinematographer award for Rajkumar Santoshi’s film ‘Barsaat’. Rakesh Ranjan won the best sound design award for the film 'Barsaat'.

Blockbuster film ‘Karan Arjun’ fetched best editing award for Sanjay Verma. Bhikoo Verma won the best stunt director award for film ‘Karan Arjun’. Bijon Dasgupta won the best art direction award for a flop movie ‘Prem’. Filmfare gave Asha Bhosle a 'special award'. Dharmendra’s son Bobby Deol and Rajesh Khanna’s daughter won the ‘best debut’ award in male and female category respectively. Mithun Chakraborty won the best villain award for film ‘Jallad’. Jackie Shroff won the best supporting actor trophy for film ‘Rangeela’.

Mani Ratnam's film 'Bombay' won best film (critics) for producer S. Sriram and best perfumer (critics) for Manisha Koirala. Dhar Dharmendra's son Booby Deol and Rajesh Khanna's daughter Twinkle Khanna had won the' best debut award' in male and female category respectively.
