The First National Film Awards were bestowed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India since 1953. The Directorate of Film Festivals is an establishment under the Indian government which is responsible for the grand and prestigious ceremony. The goal of the award function is to honour the films made all over India, on a wide range of national scale, to enhance the propagation of Indian art and culture. The Directorate works under the aegis of the Government of India.

The National Awards are given to motivate and inspire actors, actresses, directors and other people involved in the television industry. Esteemed personalities from the television world were made the jury. There are different juries for different awards, and jury goes through the works that are submitted meticulously. A committee was formed and Mangal Das Pakvasa was appointed as a chairman for the awards to be distributed for the films released in the year 1953. Awards were branched in three categories namely, Documentaries, Children's films and Feature films where Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit were rewarded in each category.

For the first two categories, Gold Medal was given as President's Gold Medal. For Children's films, it was bestowed as Prime Minister's Gold Medal. In the First National Film Awards, Prime Minister's Gold Medal Award was awarded for Children's film, but it was not awarded to any film since there were none that matched their criteria.

The 1st National Film Awards took place on 10 October 1954, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The prestigious awards were given by then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Shyamchi Aai won the All India Best Feature Film award category and was honoured the President's Gold Medal. Do Bigha Zamin got All India Certificate of Merit for his outstanding performance.

Khela Ghar with his exceptional performance won the All India Certificate of Merit for Best Children's Film. Mahabalipuram film which was in the English language directed by Jagat Murari Jagat Murari was a very well-known Indian Film dir >> Read More... won the President's Gold Medal for the Best Documentary Film award. Holy Himalayas and Tree of Wealth got the Certificate of Merit.
