Grover is the son of the white couple, Dave and Gemma Johnson. Gemma Johnson is the wife of Dave, who gets a new job as Principal at a private school, which made them go to California. Dave is a professional conflict mediator who is an expert in resolving the disputes. Western Michigan University is his Alma mater. Calvin is the owner of Calvin’s Pit Shop, an auto repair shop. He is the husband of Tina. He and Tina have two children named Malcolm and Marty. Tina had an early career as a singer, but now she helps her husband. Malcolm is a good baseball player. While he was shining in his career, as fate would have it, he met with an accident that ruined his life. Marty, after a lot of difficulties, found him a job as a security guard at JPL, where Marty works as an engineer. Grover is an elementary school student.

The series opens with Dave with his family relocating from Michigan to Los Angeles, a city in California. They can only afford a house in the working-class, where mostly the neighbors are minority people. While Tina, Malcolm, and Marty welcome them, Calvin is not doing so.
