However, due to a technical fault, her ship veered off course and she spent twenty-four years in the Phantom Zone, a prison dimension. By the time she returns to earth, Kal-el has already grown up, and she begins her life as a young woman in her mid-twenties, who slowly learns to embrace her powers.

The first season starts off with her revealing her powers to National City, the fictional city where she lives. In the process, she becomes National City's protector. The second season deals with Kara and her allies trying to diffuse the fights between Earth's native populace and extraterrestrial community and investigate a shadowy organization Project Cadmus. Meanwhile, Kara faces tricky situations after befriending Lillian's stepdaughter, Lena Luthor.

In the third season, Kara struggles with the loss of Mon-El after he is forced to leave Earth. Kara and Alex's new friend, Samantha Arias, discovers she is also a Kryptonian survivor and begins a transformation from a loving single mother into the world-killing weapon known as Reign.

The fourth season kicks off with Kara having to deal with a new wave of anti-extra-terrestrial prejudice secretly instigated by Lex Luthor from prison. She is now forced to fight for the socio-political rights of aliens. More controversies emerge when Col. Haley and the President try to force Supergirl to reveal her identity,

The fifth season brings even more troubles for Kara and her friends. They find themselves facing a new threat known as Leviathan, who sends their agent Rama Khan, a centuries-old immortal being who can bend the Earth, to kill Kara.
