In season 1, Ben Crawford, played by Ryan Phillipe, is accused of murdering a five-year-old boy named Tom from his neighborhood. He is married to Christy and has two daughters named Natalie, aged 16 and Abby aged 12. Tom is the son of their neighbor Jess who is separate from her husband Scott who works for the military.

Ben’ best friend Dave lives in their summer house nearby. While out on a morning run, Ben discovers the body of Tom in the woods. He was hit on the head multiple times with a flashlight. Ben is accused of murdering Tom by Cornell as he had no recollection of his previous nights affairs apart from that of him blacking out after being drunk with Dave. The Crawford family are then shunned by society due to this unfavorable turn of events. Ben also has a falling out with Dave. DNA tests reveal that Tom is Ben’ son. Ben and Jess had a one-night affair. Ben conducts investigations to prove his innocence. First, he falsely accuses Scott and other neighbors.

He is also kidnapped and manipulated by many people along the way. He and Dave sort out their differences, and he confesses to spiking his drink on the night of the murder. They then retrace Ben’ steps together. Ben and Christy have fallen apart by now. Ben and Jess sleep together again another time, and he discovers that she is bipolar. He believes that she is the killer. Then, through independent investigation, Cornell and Ben discover that Abby is the one who murdered Tom to prevent Ben from leaving Christy for Jess. Ben decides to confess to protect Abby, but Cornell believes that she will kill again. Abby finally reveals her plan that was to drown Tom and send Jess away. Season 1 then ends.
