Not only does it show how the two brothers tackle all sorts of demons, but also tests their bond as well as love and loyalty towards each other. The season begins with Sam trying to look for Dean who has embraced his new life as a demon and is being up to no good, enjoying and drinking all the time, with his new friend, Crowley.

During his search for Dean, Sam gets kidnapped by a man, Cole, whose father had been killed by Sam. He offers Dean to trade himself for Sam’s life. Dean refuses the offer, having lost his humanity and love for his brother. Sam escapes but is followed by Cole. Cole finds Dean and the two fight. Dean wins but leaves Cole to live in shame. In the meanwhile, Castiel, who is dying, is led by his follower, Hannah.

The two are attacked on their journey but are saved by Crowley, who, in return, asks Castiel to deal with Dean. Together, Castiel and Sam bring Dean back to his human form, although he retains the Mark of Cain. Post Dean being brought back to humanity, the two brothers fight various kinds of demons such as an evil werewolf, a malicious goddess, and a vengeful shape-shifter.

Their following hunt reveals a shocking relation between Crowley and a witch. Sam and Dean encounter numerous entities in their attempt to let Dean get rid of the Mark of Cain, which seemed to be bringing out the worst in him, seeking help from Metranon and Castiel. Dean gets nightmares due to the Mark, and almost kills many under its influence.

They also get hold of the precious Book of the Damned. Finally, Death tells them that if the Mark is not passed on, a Darkness will be set free into the world. Dean convinces Sam that they sacrifice themselves, for they have not benefitted the world in any way.

At the last moment, Dean launches the Mark at Death itself. Although Dean is no more under the Mark’s clutches, the repercussions do turn out to be severe, since the Darkness has been unleashed and is out free in the relatively vulnerable world. The season ends with this, leaving a sense of suspense behind as the viewers are left to wonder what disasters the world would have to face on account of the Darkness.
