The insanely popular TV show, Lost returned for its fifth season on May 13, 2009. Like its previous seasons, it aired on ABC network and comprised of 16 episodes, with the finale episode being a two-hour special. Following its trademark style, season 5 takes place in two different timelines – events occurring in 1977, and 2007. The season begins with the arrival of Oceanic Six back to the island, which reveals some important plot points.

Locke (Terry O'Quinn) is proclaimed as the new leader of the survivors. However, he is thought to be dead back in Los Angeles. This is significant's Locke dies and revives several times during the season. Later, in the season finale, it is revealed that he is indeed dead, and some unexplained phenomenon has taken his form. The series also centers around the Dharma initiative of the 1970s. Many characters return to the island via the Ajira Airways and undergo a series of time-travel flashes at the island. We are also given some history of the island, for example, the birth of the Monster, the whereabouts of the frozen wheel and some other sub-plots.

The frequent flashbacks also result in a lot of chronological disarrays among the characters, and not to mention, the viewers. Daniel Faraday, one of the central characters in the season is the key to explaining some important details regarding the nuclear bomb and its detonation to the survivors in 1977. Throughout the season, there are several talks of flashbacks, and changing the futures of the islanders. The season covers a lot of ground as it takes place during a time interval of 3 years. Most notable themes include leadership, death, and time-travel. As a whole, the season went down great with critics and fans alike. However, the series continued its spell of low ratings, as the finale was watched by the lowest record total of adults across the US. The season got nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards and several other awards.
