The Middle Season 3 belongs to the comedy genre. It started airing on 21 September 2011 and concluded on 23 May 2012 on ABC. The main cast of the season remained the same, and it took forward the story of the last season. It is produced by Warner Bros. Television, and Blackie and Blondie Productions. When the holidays are about to end, Frankie asks Mike to go for a quick and cheap family vacation as she realizes that they did not go anywhere unlike everyone else. So, they decide to go for camping in which she is remembered her spoilt honeymoon which involved Nicky who was Mike’s acquaintance from his high school when kids refuse to cooperate. Mike comes to know that Brick is skipping his gym classes due to which he has to talk to Brick’s teacher, and Frankie is left shocked to know that kids think Mike to be superior from her in the household. Axl tries to ignore Sue from coming to his locker for asking to schedule a swim class.

Frankie is humiliated after she accidentally eats Axl’s toenail trimmings and she leaves the house thinking that major changes need to be taken in all aspects of the household. Frankie goes to her mother’s house for care and advice, and Mike goes to bring her back while kids are worried about different things. Axl does not study for his PSATs which makes Frankie worried for his future, and Sue tries out for cheerleading. Mike tries to toughen Brick after he is bullied. Axl tries to avoid a test by faking sickness but later attend an evening party, Sue with Brad put together a skit, and Brick quotes Shakespeare. Sue wears an embarrassing costume for Halloween party, and Mike realizes her growing up as she takes an advice from him. Frankie takes Brick’s social skills group trick-or-treating where Axl and his friends think to crash-in but fail as they help two children to regain their stolen treats.

Frankie and Mark realize that the kids behave nicely only in front of other people when Axl behaves like a gentleman in front of a recruiter for winning college athletic scholarship, while things go out of control when Brick and Sue text with Aunt Edie’s phone. Sue and Frankie become part of a public production of “The Wizard of Oz” but director tells Frankie that Sue is off the play. Frankie talks with Sue, but Sue believes that they both will leave the play so Frankie sneaks out for rehearsals. Brick asks Uncle Rusty to attend Specials Friends Day at school but it leads to bowling, lunch, and driving lesson for the youngster which makes Mike angry. Axl is grounded when he drives blindfolded for a dare. Frankie’s parents invite them for Thanksgiving at their house but festivities start to fall apart when Frankie’s sister arrives with her family. Mike decides to keep his Christmas gift for Frankie a secret which is a new dishwasher, but she wants him to install a new dishwasher before festivities for a party.

Sue asks Reverend to tell Brick the deeper meaning of Christmas, and Bob tries to act cool which annoys Axl while working on a Christmas tree. Frankie suggests to randomly assign New Year’s resolutions to each other which results in Frankie to spend more time with Brick, Mike to smile more often, Sue to quit trying for the things which she can’t achieve, Axl to keep his room clean and Brick to stop reading all the time. They try to follow their resolutions for a week, but it turns out to be very hard when Frankie leaves Brick at work, Axl does many things to get A on a paper submitted long ago, Mike learns advantages and disadvantages of smiling, Brick suffers from reading-withdrawal, and Sue tries to form a cheer girls’ band for wrestling team when Brad, her ex-boyfriend, joins. Frankie realizes need to celebrate more milestones in the family after Aunt Ginny’s funeral and Axl eats Brick’s school project. Sue gets to know that a boy likes her at school.

Hecks use Donahues’ car for their personal use when they are away, and Sue tells her boyfriend about her feelings. Frankie celebrates Valentine’s Day with her friends and their partners and becomes angry as except Mike everyone buys roses for their wives. Axl has to write about life-changing event but he has no such thing, and Brick has to write about love which he writes about Frankie and Mike’s love. Sue wants tickets for Justin Bieber’s show which she and Frankie get after lots of efforts, but Sue goes with Carly to attend it. Mike trains Brick for annual school spelling bee, and Axl with his friends try to break the limit of 15 miles/hour on foot. Kids think that Frankie nags them a lot and Mike gives crazy punishments so they decide to show their responsible behavior, but it turns out to be harder than they thought.

Sue believes that her parents have arranged a surprise party for her even after Frankie’s refusal, Brick develops a crush for a girl of his social skills group who likes to bite things, and Axl becomes obsessed with vacuuming. Brick accepts a job of newspapers’ delivery to buy night vision goggles. Axl tries to convince Sue that long-distance relationship with Matt will not work. Frankie gets inspired by a pastor who believes in living without regrets, and Sue starts a babysitting service in which she fails. Sue develops a connection with her guidance counselor, and Frankie gets frustrated as Mike suggests to assemble their new bed himself. Brick tries to complain to President about President Fitness Test. Hecks are happy to know that Rusty is getting married but that becomes shocked when they are told that it will happen in their house.
