Kristin who is a single mother is the eldest daughter, Mandy who is a popularity-driven unintelligent teenager is the middle daughter, and the youngest daughter is Eve who is a tomboy. Season 1 started on 11 October 2011 and ended on 8 May 2012 with 24 episodes. The season starts with Mike returning to his home after an assignment at work. Mike’s advice to Eve for soccer game results in her injuring a boy whom she has a crush on, and when he tries to set up Kyle with Mandy, Kyle starts dating Kristin.

Kristin wants to hire a baby-proofer in which she is supported by Vanessa and Mike is left with no choice, and when he decides to get Mandy her job after getting irritated by her taking his money, the idea is opposed by Vanessa. Boyd gets expelled from his daycare centre at grandparent’s day due to Mike, so now Mike has to take him to work with him. When Eve denies to follow their tradition of trick-or-treating because of Victor Blake, Mike dresses up Boyd and takes him for it without caring for Kristin’s orders where he meets Elvira. Mike disallows Mandy from wearing a revealing costume, and Vanessa’s revealing dress gets the attention of their obsessive neighbour, Bill Calhoun. Mike makes Eve join their company’s softball team as he also voted for the team to go co-ed which had angered Ed, but his plan backfires when Eve grabs his position because of her superior skills. Mandy starts filling college applications, and Kristin thinks about her future. Vanessa tells Mike to stop Mandy from entering a teen modelling competition which he agrees upon after seeing the revealing pictures of Mandy that she wants to send for it, and he has to go to Travis’s home when the pictures are forwarded to his phone.

Kristin stands up for a raise to her boss, but later saves his life. Kristin moves out of the house when Mike makes new rules after learning that Kyle slept in Kristin’s bed. Their new neighbours are a lesbian couple and Mike becomes friends with one of them but later insults her. The girls make a music group and create a viral music video about Travis, and Kyle jokingly insults Ed. Boyd’s father, Ryan, returns which makes Kyle threatened as he wants to be part of his son’s life. Mandy works in Outdoor Man store till she demands more work benefits. Mandy accompanies Mike to work due to her good marketing ideas but her successful campaign makes Ed upset. Victor Blake asks Eve’s advice about dating another girl instead of asking her for school dance which makes her upset. Chad Bickle, a young pro-fisherman, makes Mike to renew his interest in travelling the world which upsets Vanessa but he ends up quitting pro-fishing to go back to his girlfriend after seeing their family and is replaced by Tony Hawk. Mandy decides to be vegan which Eve and Kristin think to be a passing phase.

Ed hires Gabriella, his daughter, as a marketing consultant which threatens Mike’s position, and Mike and Eve bring a stray dog that Mandy thinks herself to be allergic to but it is actually a childhood lie which was started by Vanessa. Mike decides to be more sociable when their neighbour doesn’t invite them to a party and Vanessa learns that Mike is the reason behind it, and Eve damages Mandy’s car. The daughters are scared of ghosts haunting the house after learning that 2 old women died in the home, and Ed keeps taking cash from Kyle. Bud, Mike’s father, and Jim, Mike’s younger brother, visit hoping to create new Outdoor Man store for which they even try to get a loan from Richard but the idea is threatened by the rivalry between Mike and Jim. The Baxter girls try to get Bud a girlfriend by providing him with an online profile.

Mike is forced to pay Ben’s hospital bill as he is hurt on their property after repeatedly playing pranks on the family and Mike also learns about Ben and Eve secretly dating. Kristin has difficulty in getting adapted to her college classes, and Ed is scared when Kyle gets hurt thinking Kyle will sue him. Mike doesn’t like Terrence, Mandy’s new boyfriend, which makes her worried, and Kyle and Ed come to know that their ancestors were from rival families. Mike misses Mandy’s schoolplay because of some Outdoor Man’s competition, and Mandy and Eve get insulted by Vanessa after hearing that she never attends their extracurricular activities. Mike is upset when Bud moves to town with his girlfriend Stella, and he has to handle the situation when Vaneesa’s spotlight for her volunteer efforts is stolen by him. Mike gets irritated by the arrival of April, Vanessa’s sister, as he thinks her to be visiting for a loan and he just used the extra money for a tank. Kristin and Kyle break-up and Kyle is worried about Mike’s opinion.
