Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 started on 22 September 2011 on ABC and ended on 17 May 2012, having completed 24 episodes. This season focuses on Meredith and Derek as they try to save their relationship along with adopting Zola. It also shows the consequences of Meredith’s decision in Alzheimer’s clinical trial. It had the same cast and crew as the previous season. Because of professional problems, Meredith and Derek face trouble in adopting Zola, but finally, they get her custody. Richard leaves his position as Chief and takes entire blame of Alzheimer’s clinical trial after knowing that Meredith did everything for curing Adele, but Miranda becomes angry and blames Meredith for destroying the career of herself and Richard. April becomes new Chief Resident but faces trouble to be taken seriously by other residents, and she develops a deeper friendship with Jackson.

All the residents prepare for their boards throughout the season in which everyone passes except April who slept with Jackson, just a night before her exam. Cristina decides to abort her baby for which Owen is not ready as he wants to have children, but he still accompanies her to the hospital and supports her. But, it creates a rift in their relationship as Cristina never wants to become a mother and Owen eventually cheats on her. Mark, Arizona, and Callie co-parent Sofia, while Lexie and Mark try to move on from each other but fail. Ben returns after giving Bailey enough time to recover from shooting trauma but is hurt to see her having very casual but physical relationship with Eli. Miranda finally breaks up with Eli and gets together with Ben. Adele’s Alzheimer increases so Richard places her in a care facility in which Ellis was before her death, but Adele falls in love with a fellow patient so staff request Richard not to come more as it can confuse her.

In the latter end of the season, he starts a relationship with Catherine Avery. Teddy and Henry now love each other deeply and face challenges to adjust to their relationship as newlyweds and Henry’s health are also stable. Henry decides to join medical school thinking about their future which leads to their first big fight, but before they can makeup, Henry gets a new tumour and he is an extremely serious condition. Teddy has to perform a heart surgery, and before going she asks Cristina to perform the surgery and as Teddy and Owen do not want Cristina to get pressurized, they drape Henry’s face so she does not know whom she is operating. Henry dies, but Owen lies to Teddy that he is fine as she is still in surgery. When she learns the truth, she is devastated and breaks her friendship with Owen and hates him for lying. In the end, Owen fires Teddy. After board results come out, residents get offers from other hospitals.

Alex chooses fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Cristina chooses to go to Mayo Clinic, and Derek gets a grant and offers to continue Alzheimer’s research at Harvard which effects Meredith’s decision to accept a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In the end, Meredith, Lexie, Derek, Cristina, Arizona, and Mark get on the plane to fly to Boise for a surgery in which Alex was replaced by Arizona, being angry to turn down Seattle Grace paediatrics fellowship. The plane crashes in which doctors and pilot survive, but Derek’s hand & Arizona’s leg is severely injured. Lexie is crushed & trapped beneath part of the plane, and she and Mark finally confess their love which turns into tragedy as she dies just after it. Meredith is shattered by her sister’s death. They find out about Mark having severe internal injuries, and the season ends with the 5 surgeons in risk as they are lost in woods and don’t even know that if help will come or if it will come then when.
