Dre is an advertising executive and wants his children to learn some of his urban culture for which they remain uninterested.

Bow, a mixed-race surgeon, is Dre’s wife and was raised by hippies. Zoey is Drey’s 15 years old daughter who is socially active, stylish, entitled, popular and attractive, and she is uninterested in her family’s dealings and is treated as world’s most perfect teenager. Andre is Dre’s 14 years old son who is a nerd, Jack is his six-year-old son who idolizes him, and Diane is his six-year-old daughter who treats herself to be more mature and smart than Jack, her twin brother.

The show revolves around Dre as he struggles in finding his cultural identity while raising his kids in a white neighbourhood. The show starts with Dre hoping for a promotion to become first senior vice president who is an African-American at his firm but realizes that for every success a price has to be paid when Andre announces his converting to Judaism on his 13th birthday to have a Bar Mitzvah. Dre tries to get Andre become friends with more of black kids, and Rainbow decides to inspire Diane to become a doctor. Dre goes overboard after getting overwhelming praises from everyone at his kids’ school for doing Rainbow’s mom duties for an entire week.

The kids are scared that Jack’s act of disobedience will make Dre and Rainbow reinstate spanking. Dre gets worried that his kids will not follow Johnson tradition on Halloween. Dre gives kids reality check after their  act at his favourite cheap restaurant which makes Zoey and Andre Jr. do a job at his office, and Diane and Jack to earn around the neighbourhood but this leads to a lot of rumours about family. Dre is happy with his mother’s visit but Bow is not, and while trying to make ‘Team Johnson’ feel more connected, Dre creates a problem for himself. Andre Jr. and Zoey are forced to babysitting which they don’t like to do. Pops help Dre when Dre feels that his machismo is questioned by Rainbow and in the process, Pops gets another chance with Ruby.

Jr. Dre decides to make Valentine’s Day romantic even after knowing that most of the time they end up fighting. Dre doesn’t like Zoey’s first serious partner, and he teaches Jr. about trash-talking school bully. For making up their quick wedding, Dre arranges vow renewal on their 15th anniversary, but everything goes down the drain when Bow’s parents arrive announced. Dre starts proving that he is still young when he is about to turn forty. Bow tricks Dre by telling that she is pregnant.

Bow invites some of her college friends including her ex-boyfriend for impressing them, and kids decide to shoot an episode of the reality show. Dre tries to do everything possible for proving a new executive wrong when he questions his darkness. Dre sets new rules which are mostly for Zoey, and Jr. teaches Diane and Jack about loopholes in rules. Dre tries to help his sister who is uncomfortable in telling their parents about her lesbian status. Jr. meets a new girl in Young Republican Club, and Diane is jealous of Zoey as Dre gives her cool nickname because of her glasses. Diane and Jack gets a scrapbook which is of kid Pops, and he narrates them story about it.
